our decadance "un"convention

Learn how one phone call from a Bollywood teacher in 2014 put the wheels in motion for our unique "un"conventional dance convention experience!

geatali, our Bollywood teacher from 2023 fall conventions, joining us again in 2024!

Our "un"convention isn't new - but we're debuting its new name in 2024 because of all of the feedback from the last few years!

Our dance conventions have always included folk/ethnic genres of dance in addition to tap, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary, breakout sessions with wellness practitioners and a focus on take-home practices over choreography combos.

We love putting together a unique schedule for each event, staffing a diverse faculty who educates on a regular basis and whenever possible, local community members in each location to serve the dancers that attend.

THE STORY: In 2014, our founder Samantha received a call from a local school of Indian classic dance who also offered Bollywood classes. Their request? To bring in a ballet teacher for their students to expand their movement vocabulary. After a wonderful conversation, both Samantha and the Bollywood teacher decided on a collaboration. They would each bring the other in to teach their students and introduce them to a style outside their comfort zone. The results? So enlightening!

The ballet students learned very quickly that even though something may look "less technical" because there aren't pirouettes or battements, it can still prove extremely challenging to learn. In their first Bollywood class, they struggled with the intricacies of the hand movements, the specificity of the movements and the different style of music. They were also so entranced by the experience. It felt new and exciting and they asked for more!

The Bollywood students had a similar experience. The postures and positions of ballet, the adagio movements and the rounded shapes were all a new way to move through space. Both groups of students were super humbled by trying the new styles and their view of dance styles beyond their own vocabulary was drastically expanded. It was truly so wonderful.

And so... when Samantha founded DECAdance in 2019 and added conventions to the schedule - this ballet to Bollywood experience was the first inspiration for creating our educational events!

MINI MAYHEM 2024

HILTON GARDEN INN EDISON

OCTOBER 27TH, 2024

Although this event for dancers aged 9 and under has a different schedule than our other "un"conventions, it's still built with that DECAdifference flair.

DECAdance proudly hosts a signature event each October just for minis and petites. Dancers under the age of nine have a full convention day dedicated to their age group called DECAdance Mini Mayhem. Halloween costumes are worn, giggles abound, and our guest teachers are carefully selected so that our youngest dancers have classes with educators who specifically work with this age group. We bring in special guests, order plenty of pizza, offer surprise bonus activities and of course - we host a huge dance party at the end of the day (seriously, does it get any better?) november 10th, 2024

Featuring live music and genres paired together for a very intentional artistic experience, New Jersey's "un"convention is going to be really special this year. Sessions may include ballet and Bollywood paired together, Latin and jazz, or African dance and tap dance. Students will be stretched - both literally and figuratively - outside their comfort zone! Anatomy-based education will start the day and each teacher will share expertise with dancers in a way that empowers them to continue practicing long after the day is through.

We are so excited to debut this experience with live music, in partial tribute to Andrea Mychaels who we lost in 2024. Andrea was an original DECA team member who also sang with big bands and rock bands across the tri-state area. We'll honor her with an epic day of dedication, education, creativity and artistry in Somerset, NJ.
